In the skiing chase, where the black-clad Jensen (Roy Dotrice) is pursuing Pedersen (Kirk Douglas), Dotrice's stand-in was one of the original saboteur heroes of the World War II Telemark operation.
Led by an international team of ex-special forces and military history experts, the 10-day attack route, or 15-day escape route, will enable guests to follow a historically correct path and stay in some of the authentic huts used by the heroes.
Even better than the movie, however, is the 2003 BBC production of The Real Heroes of Telemark by Ray Mears. I watched the entire series on Youtube in 16 parts. Many of the actual heroes who had participated sixty years before added their perspectives. The documentary also features scenes from a 1948 Norwegian movie based on the same operations and features some of the original participants. Here is another short documentary in English about this and the German invasion of Norway.
The ferry was sunk in deep freezing water in the lake, killing the 14 Norwegians who were on board, as well as the 4 German guards. Unlike the story portrayed by the film, the ferry itself was virtually unguarded while it was at the dock, and there was no possible attempt to help save anyone on board. The German atomic program was halted (although after the war, finds showed that they were never even close to completion). The Norwegian resistance involved in the factory sabotage, and sinking the ferry, are regarded as Norwegian heroes, even by the families of those they had been forced to kill. 59ce067264
